Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

This young patient presented to us with a severe spinal deformity diagnosed as scoliosis. On clinical examination, she exhibited a pronounced “S-shaped” curvature of the spine, which was clearly visible and had begun to affect her overall posture, balance, and physical appearance. She reported persistent back pain that limited her daily activities and found it increasingly difficult to maintain an upright posture for prolonged periods. In addition to the physical discomfort, the spinal deformity caused her significant cosmetic concerns, which were beginning to affect her self-esteem and confidence in social settings.

Radiological evaluation with standing spinal X-rays confirmed the presence of a marked, progressive curvature involving both the thoracic and lumbar regions. The degree of deformity was substantial, and if left untreated, it carried a high risk of further progression during growth, potentially resulting in worsening back pain, impaired spinal balance, and even respiratory compromise due to reduced lung capacity. The possibility of long-term disability and restrictions in her quality of life made timely intervention crucial in her management.
